Un duo de flics traque un faux-monnayeur mal\u00e9fique. L\u2019un des deux policiers, une t\u00eate br\u00fbl\u00e9e, va dangereusement basculer dans l\u2019ill\u00e9galit\u00e9 pour parvenir \u00e0 ses fins et entra\u00eener son coll\u00e8gue dans sa descente aux enfers. Cin\u00e9aste de l&rsquo;exp\u00e9rience des limites, fascin\u00e9 par la fronti\u00e8re t\u00e9nue entre le Bien et le Mal, la raison et la folie, le r\u00e9el et le cauchemar, William Friedkin a r\u00e9alis\u00e9 en 1985 avec <em>Police f\u00e9d\u00e9rale, Los Angeles<\/em> (titre fran\u00e7ais idiot de <em>To Live and Die in L.A.<\/em>) un de ces meilleurs films, et une \u00e9tape importante du cin\u00e9ma criminel am\u00e9ricain, qui a rarement montr\u00e9 des antih\u00e9ros aussi suicidaires. Sous-estim\u00e9 \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9poque de sa sortie, ce polar urbain qui capte magnifiquement l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re de la Cit\u00e9 des Anges (Nicolas Winding Refn s\u2019en souviendra pour <em>Drive<\/em>) est pourtant aussi r\u00e9ussi et surtout encore plus tordu que les titres de gloire de la carri\u00e8re erratique de Friedkin, <em>L\u2019Exorciste<\/em> et <em>French Connection<\/em>. On se situe, comme pour les chefs-d\u2019\u0153uvre du cin\u00e9aste \u00e0 ce jour (<em>Sorcerer<\/em>, son remake paroxystique du <em>Salaire de la peur<\/em> et <em>Cruising<\/em> descente aux enfers d\u2019un flic dans les bas-fonds des clubs gays sado maso de Greenwich Village o\u00f9 r\u00f4de un tueur en s\u00e9rie) \u00e0 mi-chemin entre la pr\u00e9cision hyperr\u00e9aliste d\u2019un contexte documentaire, et la plong\u00e9e fantastique dans l\u2019int\u00e9riorit\u00e9 de personnages en proie \u00e0 leurs d\u00e9mons. Le film est devenu embl\u00e9matique de l\u2019esth\u00e9tisme des ann\u00e9es 80, emprunt\u00e9e aux vid\u00e9os musicales dans certaines s\u00e9quences, \u00e0 l\u2019instar des polars de Michael Mann. Il est toujours remarquable par la fr\u00e9n\u00e9sie de son montage, la perversit\u00e9 de son sc\u00e9nario et l\u2019incroyable ma\u00eetrise de l\u2019espace dont fait preuve Friedkin.
