{"id":19711,"date":"2016-12-20T14:13:56","date_gmt":"2016-12-20T13:13:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/?p=19711"},"modified":"2016-12-20T18:51:13","modified_gmt":"2016-12-20T17:51:13","slug":"quo-vadis-de-mervyn-leroy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/2016\/12\/20\/quo-vadis-de-mervyn-leroy\/","title":{"rendered":"Quo vadis de Mervyn LeRoy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ARTE diffuse <em>Quo vadis<\/em> (1951) de Mervyn LeRoy dimanche 25 d\u00e9cembre \u00e0 20h55.<\/p>\n<p><em>Quo vadis<\/em> inaugure au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 50 la mode des superproductions hollywoodiennes situ\u00e9es dans l\u2019Antiquit\u00e9 romaine, tourn\u00e9es en Italie ou en Espagne et d\u00e9ployant des moyens fastueux. Le film de Mervyn LeRoy ouvre la voie d\u2019une nouvelle vague de films bibliques ou historiques apr\u00e8s ceux tourn\u00e9s dans les ann\u00e9es 20 par DeMille, Niblo et quelques autres. La plupart des p\u00e9plums \u00e0 grand spectacle des ann\u00e9es 50 seront d\u2019ailleurs des remakes de films muets, nouvelles adaptations de romans \u00e0 sujet religieux ou des Evangiles, comme <em>Ben-Hur<\/em>, <em>Les Dix Commandements<\/em> ou <em>Le Roi des Rois<\/em>. La mise en chantier de ces productions monumentales \u2013 et pas toujours rentables \u2013 appara\u00eet comme un sursaut de Hollywood pour contrer la concurrence de la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision, qui installe dans les foyers am\u00e9ricains un petit \u00e9cran en noir et blanc proposant des films, des feuilletons, des retransmissions sportives et des \u00e9missions de vari\u00e9t\u00e9s. L\u2019industrie du cin\u00e9ma r\u00e9agit avec des longs m\u00e9trages \u00e0 gros budgets et en couleur, destin\u00e9s \u00e0 des \u00e9crans de plus en plus larges, ne l\u00e9sinant pas sur les foules de figurants, les d\u00e9cors grandioses et les sc\u00e8nes spectaculaires.<\/p>\n<p><em>Quo vadis<\/em> instaure les r\u00e8gles des films de cette cat\u00e9gorie \u00ab\u00a0colossale\u00a0\u00bb et mise \u00e0 la fois sur le prestige artistique, les valeurs chr\u00e9tiennes et le divertissement le plus \u00e9chevel\u00e9 pour parvenir \u00e0 ses fins. Il est tir\u00e9 d\u2019un roman c\u00e9l\u00e8bre, succ\u00e8s international qui valut \u00e0 son auteur le prix Nobel de Litt\u00e9rature en 1905\u00a0: <em>Quo vadis\u00a0?<\/em> de l\u2019\u00e9crivain polonais Henryk Sienkiewicz, publi\u00e9 en 1895 et d\u00e9j\u00e0 adapt\u00e9 deux fois au cin\u00e9ma au temps du muet, en France puis en Italie. La version de LeRoy b\u00e9n\u00e9ficie du Technicolor, mais pas encore du format large \u2013 le film sera tourn\u00e9 en 1.37, \u00e0 la diff\u00e9rence des p\u00e9plums qui suivront. <em>La Tunique <\/em>sera en 1953 le premier film exploit\u00e9 en CinemaScope. Mervyn LeRoy \u00e9tait un cin\u00e9aste de studio qui s\u2019\u00e9tait illustr\u00e9 dans presque tous les genres, et \u00e9tait entr\u00e9 en 1938 \u00e0 la MGM. Pour <em>Quo vadis<\/em> il est \u00e9paul\u00e9 par Anthony Mann, grand sp\u00e9cialiste du western qui se charge ici de r\u00e9gler la formidable s\u00e9quence de l&rsquo;incendie de Rome, sans \u00eatre cr\u00e9dit\u00e9 au g\u00e9n\u00e9rique. Les superproductions se devaient de faire figurer des stars en haut de leur affiche. C\u2019est Robert Taylor, le s\u00e9ducteur du cin\u00e9ma hollywoodien des ann\u00e9es 30 et 40 qui h\u00e9rite du r\u00f4le de Vinicius, orgueilleux g\u00e9n\u00e9ral romain qui a son retour de campagne va tomber amoureux d\u2019une jeune otage chr\u00e9tienne (la belle actrice anglaise Deborah Kerr) et se rallier \u00e0 la cause des Chr\u00e9tiens, pers\u00e9cut\u00e9s par le cruel N\u00e9ron.
