On peut le v\u00e9rifier en revoyant <em>Le Schpountz<\/em> (1938) dans lequel le com\u00e9dien marseillais est g\u00e9nial. <em>Le Schpountz<\/em> est un film \u00e0 part dans la carri\u00e8re de Pagnol. Au milieu des ann\u00e9es 30 Pagnol va entreprendre une s\u00e9rie de films qui sont directement \u00e9crits et con\u00e7us pour le cin\u00e9ma, pour la premi\u00e8re fois sans origines th\u00e9\u00e2trales ou litt\u00e9raires. Il y aura d\u2019abord <em>Merlusse<\/em> et <em>Cigalon<\/em> en 1935, mais c\u2019est surtout <em>Le Schpountz<\/em>, r\u00e9alis\u00e9 trois ans plus tard, que le public retiendra. Pagnol y trouve un langage cin\u00e9matographique sp\u00e9cifique, qui privil\u00e9gie l\u2019enregistrement scrupuleux de merveilleuses performances d\u2019acteurs, au d\u00e9triment parfois du r\u00e9alisme, de la coh\u00e9rence ou de l\u2019efficacit\u00e9 dramatique. <em>Le Schpountz<\/em> propose de longues s\u00e9quences qui sont autant de blocs de temps o\u00f9 les com\u00e9diens peuvent faire vivre leurs personnages, aid\u00e9s par un texte admirable. Ainsi la s\u00e9quence d\u2019ouverture du <em>Schpountz<\/em> est-elle anthologique : une formidable dispute entre Ir\u00e9n\u00e9e (Fernandel) et son oncle Baptiste (Fernand Charpin, grandiose), dans l\u2019arri\u00e8re-boutique de ce dernier, au sujet des talents cach\u00e9s du jeune homme qui r\u00eave de devenir une vedette de cin\u00e9ma, avec la c\u00e9l\u00e8bre r\u00e9plique \u00ab\u00a0tu n\u2019es pas bon \u00e0 rien, tu es mauvais \u00e0 tout.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Mais on pourrait \u00e9galement citer la sc\u00e8ne o\u00f9 le barman d\u2019h\u00f4tel jou\u00e9 par Maupin, autre \u00ab\u00a0schpountz\u00a0\u00bb du film, explique sa ressemblance avec Raimu, ou la d\u00e9monstration de Fernandel qui d\u00e9clame la m\u00eame phrase, \u00ab\u00a0tout condamn\u00e9 aura la t\u00eate tranch\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb, sur des registres et des intonations vari\u00e9s, afin de convaincre un auditoire hilare de son g\u00e9nie dramatique. Certes les meilleures sc\u00e8nes du<em> Schpountz<\/em> se situent dans sa premi\u00e8re partie, mais la suite du film propose une d\u00e9fense et illustration de l\u2019art comique, lorsque Ir\u00e9n\u00e9e d\u00e9couvre avec stup\u00e9faction qu\u2019il est dou\u00e9 pour faire rire les foules, pas pour les faire pleurer. Pagnol convoque alors Chaplin pour faire l\u2019\u00e9loge du rire, \u00ab\u00a0le propre de l\u2019homme\u00a0\u00bb, langage universel qui r\u00e9unit les peuples et trouve dans le cin\u00e9ma son plus puissant transmetteur. Car <em>Le Schpountz <\/em>est aussi et surtout une d\u00e9claration d\u2019amour au monde du spectacle et plus particuli\u00e8rement du cin\u00e9ma, aussi paradoxale que sinc\u00e8re de la part d\u2019un homme de th\u00e9\u00e2tre. Comme Guitry, Pagnol fut l\u2019un des premiers \u00e0 comprendre que la particularit\u00e9 du cin\u00e9ma parlant, au-del\u00e0 des artifices formels des avant-gardes muettes, r\u00e9sidait au contraire dans l\u2019enregistrement fid\u00e8le des images et des sons, et l\u2019attention amoureuse aux acteurs. Les conditions rocambolesques de tournage ont sans doute favoris\u00e9 le vent de libert\u00e9 qui souffle sur le film. <em>Le Schpountz<\/em> fut en effet tourn\u00e9 en m\u00eame temps qu\u2019un autre grand film de Pagnol, <em>Regain<\/em> d\u2019apr\u00e8s Giono, m\u00e9lodrame au registre beaucoup plus sombre, dans lequel Fernandel campe un personnage aux antipodes d\u2019Ir\u00e9n\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>R\u00e9\u00e9dition du <em>Schpountz<\/em> en salles et en version restaur\u00e9e depuis le 7 septembre, avec deux autres films de Marcel Pagnol interpr\u00e9t\u00e9s par Fernandel\u00a0: <em>Na\u00efs<\/em> (co-r\u00e9al.\u00a0: Raymond Leboursier, 1945) et <em>Topaze<\/em> (troisi\u00e8me version, 1951).
