Le film sera \u00e9galement disponible en t\u00e9l\u00e9vision de rattrapage pendant sept jours sur ARTE+7.<\/p>\n<p>Au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 90, apr\u00e8s un s\u00e9v\u00e8re passage \u00e0 vide de plus de dix ans durant lequel il fait un peu n\u2019importe quoi, aux Etats-Unis ou en Europe, Robert Altman a besoin d\u2019un succ\u00e8s pour revenir sur le devant de la sc\u00e8ne. Tandis qu\u2019il pr\u00e9pare un projet personnel, l\u2019adaptation de plusieurs nouvelles de Raymond Carver, Altman accepte de r\u00e9aliser <em>The Player<\/em> d\u2019apr\u00e8s sc\u00e9nario de Michael Tolkin, en remplacement de Sidney Lumet dont les exigences financi\u00e8res avaient refroidis les producteurs du film. Il le d\u00e9montre de mani\u00e8re tr\u00e8s ostentatoire d\u00e8s le d\u00e9but du film, avec un long plan-s\u00e9quence acrobatique de 7 minutes et 47 secondes, o\u00f9 se croisent de nombreux personnages, parmi lesquels les principaux protagonistes de l\u2019histoire, dans une farandole \u00e9tincelante de dialogues improvis\u00e9s au milieu d\u2019un studio hollywoodien. C\u2019est le retour de la m\u00e9thode Altman, imm\u00e9diatement reconnaissable : une \u0153uvre chorale, avec la succession et parfois la superpositions de plusieurs actions et conversations dans le m\u00eame plan, un ton cynique qui \u00e9pingle les travers d\u2019une \u00e9poque ou d\u2019un microcosme social, le d\u00e9tournement critique des grands genres hollywoodiens\u2026 Certaines figures de style r\u00e9currentes chez Altman comme la distanciation, la mise en abyme ou le commentaire ironique du film \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur de l\u2019image (ou la bande-son) se d\u00e9ploient avec virtuosit\u00e9 dans <em>The Player<\/em>. Les affiches de films am\u00e9ricains classiques aux titres \u00e9vocateurs dans le bureau du producteur ex\u00e9cutif ou des \u00e9criteaux dans les rues de Los Angeles viennent ainsi souligner ou ponctuer avec humour le d\u00e9roulement de l\u2019action, comme autrefois les messages dans le haut-parleur de <em>M*A*S*H<\/em> ou les chansons de Leonard Cohen dans <em>John McCabe<\/em>. Dans <em>The Player<\/em> Altman entrem\u00eale le film noir \u2013 qu\u2019il avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 brillamment revisit\u00e9 dans <em>Le Priv\u00e9<\/em> \u2013 et le film sur Hollywood, cat\u00e9gorie qui existe depuis le cin\u00e9ma muet. Mais jamais aucun cin\u00e9aste \u2013 m\u00eame Billy Wilder dans <em>Boulevard du cr\u00e9puscule<\/em> \u2013 n\u2019avait \u00e9t\u00e9 aussi vachard et cruel dans sa description du petit monde du cin\u00e9ma hollywoodien. Altman se moque de l\u2019obsession des films concepts qui peuvent \u00eatre racont\u00e9s et surtout vendus en une phrase, des id\u00e9es absurdes de suites et remakes \u00e0 la cha\u00eene, des stars du moment que l\u2019on veut mettre \u00e0 toutes les sauces, le \u00ab\u00a0name dropping\u00a0\u00bb permanent. Altman n\u2019a jamais port\u00e9 les studios hollywoodiens dans son c\u0153ur mais il ne peut que constater avec amertume la m\u00e9diocrit\u00e9 et le d\u00e9clin de toute ambition artistique y triomphent depuis les ann\u00e9es 80. <em>The Player<\/em> est une production ind\u00e9pendante \u00e0 petit budget, ce qui permet \u00e0 Altman d\u2019exprimer sa verve satirique en toute libert\u00e9. Pourtant <em>The Player<\/em> n\u2019est pas un simple r\u00e8glement de comptes dans lequel Altman se paye Hollywood. La causticit\u00e9 du cin\u00e9aste et son jugement moral vont bien au-del\u00e0 de la peinture sans complaisance de Hollywood et des yuppies qui en ont pris le pouvoir. M\u00eame si une cinquantaine de vedettes se bousculent au g\u00e9n\u00e9rique de The Player, souvent dans leurs propres r\u00f4les et pour de fugaces apparitions, le film d\u2019Altman se distingue de ses fresques chorales comme <em>Nashville<\/em> ou <em>Un mariage<\/em>. <em>The Player<\/em> est en effet le portrait d\u2019un homme seul, arriviste, carri\u00e9riste et sans vergogne, assassin par accident, d\u00e9nu\u00e9 du moindre sens moral\u00a0: le producteur ex\u00e9cutif interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 par Tim Robbins (photo en t\u00eate de texte). C\u2019est la premi\u00e8re fois que Altman fait de son antih\u00e9ros un personnage totalement n\u00e9gatif, qui agit en toute impunit\u00e9. La fable de Robert Altman prend des allures cauchemardesques, et une dimension beaucoup plus vaste, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle d\u2019un pays.
