C\u2019est l\u2019\u00e9poque o\u00f9 les studios, en perte de vitesse et d\u00e9boussol\u00e9s par les attentes d\u2019un public jeune et libertaire d\u00e9cident de faire confiance \u00e0 de nouveaux auteurs, et \u00e0 leur confier des projets ambitieux ou personnels. L\u2019immense succ\u00e8s de <em>Easy Rider<\/em> de Dennis Hopper invite les patrons hollywoodiens \u00e0 faire confiance \u00e0 ces rebelles opportunistes mais parfois extr\u00eamement dou\u00e9s (Coppola, Scorsese, De Palma, Friedkin.) Lorsque Universal lui donne carte blanche pour r\u00e9aliser <em>Macadam \u00e0 deux voies<\/em>, une histoire de courses de voitures trafiqu\u00e9es, Hellman propose \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9crivain Rudolph Wurlitzer de r\u00e9\u00e9crire le sc\u00e9nario. Il tourne le film dans l\u2019ordre chronologique absolu, et les com\u00e9diens ne savent pas ce qui les attend le lendemain. Cette m\u00e9thode a vite fait de profond\u00e9ment les d\u00e9stabiliser, d\u2019autant plus que ce sont des non professionnels emprunt\u00e9s \u00e0 la sc\u00e8ne rock (James Taylor, Dennis Wilson le batteur des Beach Boys), \u00e0 l\u2019exception du grand Warren Oates, com\u00e9dien f\u00e9tiche de Monte Hellman et Sam Peckinpah. <em>Macadam \u00e0 deux voies<\/em> est un road-movie existentiel dans lequel un chauffeur et son m\u00e9canicien, \u00e0 bord d\u2019une Chevrolet 1955 customis\u00e9e, rencontrent une fille (Laurie Bird, la bien nomm\u00e9e) sur la route et entrent en rivalit\u00e9 (\u00e0 propos de la fille, la voiture, la vitesse, la jeunesse, la libert\u00e9) avec un autre conducteur, un play-boy plus \u00e2g\u00e9 \u00e0 bord d\u2019une Pontiac GTO. <em>Macadam \u00e0 deux voies<\/em> est le plus beau voyage de l\u2019histoire du cin\u00e9ma moderne (avec <em>Profession : reporter<\/em> d\u2019Antonioni, interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 par Jack Nicholson, un hasard ?) C\u2019est aussi le plus d\u00e9sesp\u00e9r\u00e9. Les voyageurs ne sont guid\u00e9s par aucun but; le trajet n\u2019est pas l\u2019occasion d\u2019une d\u00e9couverte de soi, ni du monde, encore moins des autres. Les protagonistes n\u2019ont pas de nom, d\u00e9sign\u00e9s par leurs fonctions ou leur r\u00f4le (\u00ab\u00a0The Driver\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0The Girl\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0The Mechanic\u00a0\u00bb). Les deux voitures apparaissent au g\u00e9n\u00e9rique de fin dans la distribution, avec les com\u00e9diens. La fille passe indiff\u00e9remment entre les bras des trois hommes, et d\u2019une voiture \u00e0 l\u2019autre. Ni fuite, ni qu\u00eate, le voyage en voiture est ici l\u2019histoire d\u2019un effacement du sens, des affects, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 une forme de nihilisme absolu qui ne d\u00e9bouche m\u00eame pas sur la mort (trop romantique !) mais sur la disparition, non pas des personnages \u2013 toujours au volant \u2013 mais du film lui-m\u00eame, qui soudain se fige et br\u00fble dans une simulation d\u2019accident de projection. On vous parle de pellicule 35mm, d\u2019un autre si\u00e8cle. Chef-d\u2019\u0153uvre absolu du cin\u00e9ma am\u00e9ricain des ann\u00e9es 70, grand (seul ?) titre moderne et sans concessions produit dans le syst\u00e8me hollywoodien, <em>Macadam \u00e0 deux voies<\/em> est un \u00e9chec sans appel (malgr\u00e9 une notori\u00e9t\u00e9 instantan\u00e9e de film g\u00e9nial) et compromet gravement la carri\u00e8re de son auteur. Hellman n\u2019est pas comme Cimino un artiste maudit bris\u00e9 dans son \u00e9lan m\u00e9galomane, mais un r\u00e9alisateur qui n\u2019arrive \u2013 presque \u2013 plus \u00e0 faire des films, par malchance et inadaptation. Entre 1971 et aujourd\u2019hui, Monte Hellman n\u2019a tourn\u00e9 que cinq films.
