Une \u00e9dition tr\u00e8s riche qui contient des images d\u2019archives de Paul Schrader sur le tournage ainsi que des t\u00e9moignages des acteurs, de Giorgio Moroder et un commentaire audio du r\u00e9alisateur.<\/p>\n<p>Au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 80 le studio Universal entreprit la production de trois remakes de classiques hollywoodiens, comme c\u2019\u00e9tait la mode depuis la fin de la d\u00e9cennie pr\u00e9c\u00e9dente. <em>The Thing<\/em> de John Carpenter, <em>La F\u00e9line<\/em> de Paul Schrader et <em>Scarface<\/em> de Brian De Palma. Tous subirent de graves \u00e9checs critiques et publics. <em>La F\u00e9line<\/em> fut sans doute le plus conspu\u00e9 des trois. On reprocha \u00e0 Schrader de profaner le film de Jacques Tourneur, dont l\u2019art reposait presqu\u2019enti\u00e8rement sur la suggestion, et lassait volontairement planer le doute sur la mal\u00e9diction qui planait autour de son h\u00e9ro\u00efne. Schrader se justifia en pr\u00e9textant que son film n\u2019\u00e9tait pas \u00e0 proprement parler un remake, et qu\u2019il n\u2019aurait pas du porter le m\u00eame titre que la version originale de 1942. Ce suppos\u00e9 blasph\u00e8me tient \u00e0 la nature explicite de <em>La F\u00e9line<\/em>, qui m\u00eale \u00e9rotisme trouble, violence gore, proth\u00e8ses et maquillages qui permettent d\u2019exhiber (bri\u00e8vement) des transformations \u00e0 vue. Pourtant <em>La F\u00e9line<\/em> n\u2019a rien d\u2019un film fantastique jouant sur le suspens, les morceaux de bravoure et les effets sp\u00e9ciaux spectaculaires. Pour la premi\u00e8re fois de sa carri\u00e8re Schrader, sc\u00e9nariste vedette du Nouvel Hollywood, n\u2019a pas \u00e9crit le sc\u00e9nario de son film. On le doit \u00e0 Alan Ormsby, choix \u00e9trange pour un film de studio puisque Ormsby \u00e9tait connu pour sa collaboration avec Bob Clark (<em>Le Mort vivant<\/em>) et avait sign\u00e9 un film d\u2019horreur \u00e0 petit budget sur un tueur en s\u00e9rie inspir\u00e9 d\u2019Ed Gein, particuli\u00e8rement malsain, <em>Deranged<\/em>. Mais <em>La F\u00e9line<\/em>, film de commande, se r\u00e9v\u00e8le aussi personnel, sinon davantage, que les pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents longs m\u00e9trage \u00e9crits et r\u00e9alis\u00e9s de Paul Schrader. Le cin\u00e9aste d\u00e9laisse les conventions du film d\u2019horreur et privil\u00e9gie l\u2019\u00e9rotisme, l\u2019onirisme et le symbolisme. L\u2019histoire de cette secte mill\u00e9naire adepte de la bestialit\u00e9 offre \u00e0 Schrader le pr\u00e9texte de parler de Eros et Thanatos, de virginit\u00e9, d\u2019inceste et de relations sadomasochistes. Schrader opte pour une approche mythologique de la sexualit\u00e9 et de la part animale, sous influence jungienne. Il glisse aussi des r\u00e9f\u00e9rences \u00e0 <em>Vita Nova<\/em> de Dante, sur la passion \u00e9prouv\u00e9e pour une jeune femme inaccessible \u2013 d\u00e9j\u00e0 pr\u00e9sentes dans le sc\u00e9nario d\u2019<em>Obsession<\/em> r\u00e9alis\u00e9 par Brian De Palma. Schrader s\u2019\u00e9loigne du r\u00e9alisme de ses premiers films pour une stylisation extr\u00eame de tous les \u00e9l\u00e9ments dramatiques et esth\u00e9tiques, ce qui conf\u00e8re \u00e0 <em>La F\u00e9line<\/em> un univers visuel absolument fascinant. Les contributions du d\u00e9corateur Ferdinando Scarfiotti (collaborateur de Bertolucci), du directeur de la photographie John Bailey et du compositeur Giorgio Moroder furent essentielles \u00e0 la r\u00e9ussite artistique de <em>La F\u00e9line<\/em>, sans oublier l\u2019incroyable beaut\u00e9 de Nastassja Kinski (photo en t\u00eate de texte), parfaite dans le r\u00f4le principal. Cette succession d\u2019images mani\u00e9ristes \u00e0 la colorim\u00e9trie hallucinante, nimb\u00e9es par les lourdes nappes de synth\u00e9tiseur de Moroder, associ\u00e9 \u00e0 David Bowie le temps d\u2019une chanson g\u00e9niale, d\u00e9clencha l\u2019incompr\u00e9hension ou la moquerie au moment de la sortie du film. Si <em>The Thing <\/em>et <em>Scarface<\/em> furent consid\u00e9r\u00e9s quelques ann\u00e9es apr\u00e8s leur r\u00e9ception catastrophique comme des chefs-d\u2019\u0153uvre, la r\u00e9habilitation de <em>La F\u00e9line<\/em> fut plus tardive, et elle n\u2019est encore aujourd\u2019hui que partielle. Il s\u2019agit pourtant d\u2019un des meilleurs films de Schrader, entre <em>Blue Collar<\/em> et <em>Mishima<\/em>.
