{"id":17603,"date":"2015-12-23T14:39:59","date_gmt":"2015-12-23T13:39:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/?p=17603"},"modified":"2016-01-02T14:42:37","modified_gmt":"2016-01-02T13:42:37","slug":"driver-de-walter-hill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/2015\/12\/23\/driver-de-walter-hill\/","title":{"rendered":"Driver de Walter Hill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>L\u2019atelier des Images et Studiocanal viennent de r\u00e9\u00e9diter en blu-ray l\u2019excellent <em>Driver<\/em> (<em>The Driver<\/em>, 1978), sur un disque qui propose en compl\u00e9ments un documentaire montrant l\u2019\u00e9quipe de tournage au travail et des discussions avec Walter Hill et le producteur Lawrence Gordon, et un prologue alternatif (plus explicatif sur les relations entre les personnages et leurs motivations) fort judicieusement coup\u00e9 au montage.<\/p>\n<p>Au sein d\u2019une filmographie in\u00e9gale mais sympathique &#8211; quelques bons titres et pas mal de nanars &#8211; <em>Driver<\/em> s\u2019av\u00e8re \u00eatre le meilleur film de Walter Hill, le plus excitant et original tant sur le plan du concept que de l\u2019ex\u00e9cution.<\/p>\n<p><em>Driver <\/em>est un exercice de style autour des figures arch\u00e9typales du film noir, tent\u00e9 par l\u2019abstraction, sous influence directe de Jean-Pierre Melville et du cin\u00e9ma japonais. La sc\u00e8ne o\u00f9 le conducteur est innocent\u00e9 au cours d\u2019une identification de suspects par une joueuse qui l\u2019a pourtant reconnu lors d\u2019un braquage dans un casino provient du <em>Samoura\u00ef<\/em>. La sc\u00e8ne est cependant moins vertigineuse que dans le film de Melville puisque l\u2019on apprend plus tard que la jeune femme a \u00e9t\u00e9 pay\u00e9e pour fournir un faux t\u00e9moignage \u2013 la cupidit\u00e9 caract\u00e9rise tous les personnages de <em>Driver<\/em>, en premier lieu son suppos\u00e9 h\u00e9ros, \u00e0 l\u2019exception du d\u00e9tective m\u00fb par un obsession pathologique : coincer l\u2019as du volant co\u00fbte que co\u00fbte, quitte \u00e0 employer des moyens ill\u00e9gaux. <em>Driver<\/em> poss\u00e8de la particularit\u00e9 de ne nommer aucun de ses protagonistes. Bruce Dern est un flic irascible, ses coll\u00e8gues sont des souffre-douleurs r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement trait\u00e9s de \u00ab\u00a0connards\u00a0\u00bb, Isabelle Adjani est une joueuse, Ryan O\u2019Neal (photo en t\u00eate de texte) est parfois interpell\u00e9 sous les sobriquets de \u00ab\u00a0cow-boy\u00a0\u00bb ou de \u00ab\u00a0driver\u00a0\u00bb, etc. Cette anomalie est sans doute un clin d\u2019\u0153il au cin\u00e9ma de Kurosawa (le garde du corps incarn\u00e9 par Toshiro Mifune dont la profession donnait son titre au film <em>Yojimbo<\/em>) et de Sergio Leone \u2013 l\u2019homme sans nom interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 par Clint Eastwood dans la trilogie des dollars. Elle souligne la dimension g\u00e9n\u00e9rique des \u00ab\u00a0personnages\u00a0\u00bb &#8211; plut\u00f4t des figures d\u00e9nu\u00e9es de psychologie, monolithiques, mais caract\u00e9ris\u00e9es par une sp\u00e9cialit\u00e9, un talent particulier avec lesquels elles se confondent. Walter Hill ne se contente pas de citer ses ma\u00eetres de cin\u00e9ma puisque l\u2019\u00e9pisode du sac rempli de dollars dans une consigne de gare ferroviaire et de la traque dans un train constitue un d\u00e9calque d\u2019une s\u00e9quence fameuse de <em>Guet-Apens<\/em> de Sam Peckinpah \u00e9crit par un certain\u2026 Walter Hill. Les morceaux de bravoure de <em>Driver<\/em> sont, sans surprise, des courses-poursuites en voitures dans les rues nocturnes de Los Angeles et elles ne d\u00e9\u00e7oivent en rien, remarquablement r\u00e9gl\u00e9es et mont\u00e9es. C\u2019est un film qui se bonifie avec le temps et \u00e0 chaque nouvelle vision je continue de le pr\u00e9f\u00e9rer \u00e0 d\u2019autres thrillers am\u00e9ricains plus c\u00f4t\u00e9s comme <em>Bullitt<\/em> et <em>French Connection<\/em>, c\u00e9l\u00e8bres eux aussi pour leurs cascades automobiles. Dans une sorte de filiation transparente <em>Driver<\/em> a de toute \u00e9vidence influenc\u00e9 Nicolas Winding Refn et son <em>Drive<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17605\" style=\"width: 1610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17605\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17605\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/files\/thedriver.jpg\" alt=\"Isabelle Adjani dans Driver\" width=\"1600\" height=\"877\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-17605\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Isabelle Adjani dans Driver<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ryan O\u2019Neal, acteur sous-estim\u00e9, y est formidable. Un \u00ab\u00a0vrai dur\u00a0\u00bb pour reprendre l\u2019expression du producteur Lawrence Gordon, et un bon choix de casting, plus int\u00e9ressant que si le r\u00f4le avait \u00e9t\u00e9 offert \u00e0 Charles Bronson, Clint Eastwood ou Steve McQueen. Isabelle Adjani p\u00e9riode <em>Nosferatu<\/em> (donc sublime), dans l\u2019une de ses rares incartades hollywoodiennes, est fascinante de beaut\u00e9 v\u00e9n\u00e9neuse. Il me semble que l\u2019actrice fran\u00e7aise \u00e0 la chevelure de jais a \u00e9t\u00e9 doubl\u00e9e. Je n\u2019ai pas reconnu sa voix et elle ne poss\u00e8de pas le moindre accent (aucune allusion \u00e0 des origines \u00e9trang\u00e8res de son personnage dans la sc\u00e8ne d\u2019intimidation avec le d\u00e9tective).
