Ripley devient l\u2019ami du riche h\u00e9ritier, le tue et endosse son identit\u00e9, plongeant dans une spirale de mensonges et de meurtres. Cette nouvelle adaptation du roman de Patricia Highsmith publi\u00e9 en 1955 est davantage fid\u00e8le \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153uvre originale que ne l\u2019\u00e9tait celle de Ren\u00e9 Cl\u00e9ment et son sc\u00e9nariste Paul G\u00e9gauff, le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre thriller <em>Plein Soleil<\/em>, r\u00e9alis\u00e9 en 1960 avec Alain Delon dans le r\u00f4le de Ripley. La version de Minghella met l\u2019accent sur la confusion sexuelle de Ripley et son attirance pour sa victime, au d\u00e9triment de la fianc\u00e9e de Dickie, Marge Sherwood (Gwyneth Paltrow), objet de convoitise dans la version G\u00e9gauff\/Cl\u00e9ment. Minghella approfondit l\u2019\u00e9tude psychologique de chaque personnage et transforme Ripley en cam\u00e9l\u00e9on, m\u00e9lange d\u2019arriviste fascin\u00e9 par le monde du luxe et de psychopathe criminel aux pulsions schizophr\u00e9niques. La premi\u00e8re partie du film d\u00e9ploie des tr\u00e9sors de sophistication pour d\u00e9crire l\u2019existence dor\u00e9e de la jeunesse bourgeoise am\u00e9ricaine en vill\u00e9giature en Europe, profitant des plaisirs des voyages, du jazz et de la dolce vita romaine. A partir du premier meurtre, le film bascule dans un labyrinthe mental angoissant, et sonne souvent juste dans son portrait de l\u2019ambigu Ripley, imposteur g\u00e9nial, criminel accidentel et homosexuel honteux.
