{"id":16722,"date":"2015-10-02T02:24:09","date_gmt":"2015-10-02T01:24:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/?p=16722"},"modified":"2015-10-01T21:21:59","modified_gmt":"2015-10-01T20:21:59","slug":"la-valse-des-pantins-de-martin-scorsese-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/2015\/10\/02\/la-valse-des-pantins-de-martin-scorsese-2\/","title":{"rendered":"La Valse des pantins de Martin Scorsese"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A New York un aspirant comique sans aucun succ\u00e8s, Rupert Pupkin (Robert De Niro), pour acc\u00e9der enfin \u00e0 la notori\u00e9t\u00e9, d\u00e9cide d\u2019enlever le pr\u00e9sentateur vedette d&rsquo;un show t\u00e9l\u00e9vis\u00e9, Jerry Langford (Jerry Lewis), avec la complicit\u00e9 d\u2019une groupie totalement cingl\u00e9e, et n&rsquo;accepte de le lib\u00e9rer qu&rsquo;\u00e0 la condition de participer \u00e0 son spectacle. <em>La Valse des pantins<\/em> (<em>The King of Comedy<\/em>, 1982), diffus\u00e9 sur ARTE lundi 26 octobre \u00e0 22h40 est le chef-d\u2019\u0153uvre inconnu (ou presque) de Scorsese, un film dont l\u2019aura ne cesse de grandir depuis sa sortie assez confidentielle et son \u00e9chec malgr\u00e9 une s\u00e9lection au Festival de Cannes. C\u2019est \u00e0 l&rsquo;assassinat de John Lennon et \u00e0 Andy Warhol qu\u2019on pense le plus en voyant cette satire implacable de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 du spectacle dont la violence\u00a0s\u2019incarne dans l\u2019affrontement d\u2019un monstre \u00e0 deux t\u00eates\u00a0: la star cynique et misanthrope des m\u00e9dias (Jerry Lewis) et le sociopathe hyst\u00e9rique qui r\u00eave d\u2019obtenir son quart d\u2019heure de gloire (Robert De Niro en comique ringard.) Encore un film sur l\u2019\u00e9chec d\u2019un pessimisme gla\u00e7ant qui prend des faux airs de com\u00e9die tashlinesque pour dresser un \u00e9tat de lieux de l\u2019Am\u00e9rique et le portrait d\u2019une \u00e2me perdue aussi d\u00e9sesp\u00e9r\u00e9 et noir que <em>Taxi Driver<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12387\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/fr\/olivierpere\/files\/valse-des-pantins-1983-07-g.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12387\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12387\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/fr\/olivierpere\/files\/valse-des-pantins-1983-07-g.jpg\" alt=\"Jerry Lewis et Robert De Niro\" width=\"1200\" height=\"762\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/files\/valse-des-pantins-1983-07-g.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/files\/valse-des-pantins-1983-07-g-440x280.jpg 440w, https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/files\/valse-des-pantins-1983-07-g-1024x650.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/files\/valse-des-pantins-1983-07-g-580x368.jpg 580w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12387\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jerry Lewis et Robert De Niro<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Cette vision cauchemardesque de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 du spectacle peut \u00e9galement s\u2019appr\u00e9hender comme un tr\u00e8s brillant post-scriptum \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153uvre de Jerry Lewis cin\u00e9aste, avec laquelle elle entretient autant de relations \u2013 sinon davantage &#8211; que le reste de la filmographie de Scorsese. D\u00e8s son premier long m\u00e9trage <i>Le Dingue du palace<\/i> \u2013 avec l\u2019arriv\u00e9e d\u2019une vedette de cin\u00e9ma dans l\u2019h\u00f4tel qui est le sosie du groom interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 par Jerry Lewis, puis des com\u00e9dies sur les coulisses des studios, <em>Le Zinzin d\u2019Hollywood<\/em> et <em>Jerry souffre-douleur<\/em>, Jerry Lewis avait lui aussi d\u00e9nonc\u00e9 la fascination exerc\u00e9e par le star-system et le besoin maladif d\u2019\u00eatre aim\u00e9 et d\u2019exister gr\u00e2ce au regard des foules, par \u00e9crans interpos\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Voici ce qu\u2019\u00e9crivait le brillant critique de cin\u00e9ma et ami trop t\u00f4t disparu Philippe Arnaud sur ce film g\u00e9nial pour le catalogue du Festival du film \u00ab\u00a0Entrevues\u00a0\u00bb de Belfort en 1996\u00a0:<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0C\u2019est un cauchemar parce que le monde du film n\u2019a plus de dehors; c\u2019est la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision et le r\u00eave de ceux qui veulent y acc\u00e9der; ainsi se r\u00e9sume la sph\u00e8re \u00e9troite qui enclot les \u00e9v\u00e9nements. L\u2019effrayant histrionisme de Rupert Pupkin, pr\u00e9tendant \u00e0 la notori\u00e9t\u00e9 cathodique, avec l\u2019aide de Masha, constitue un type de freak purement psychologique, pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 avec une froideur clinique qui associe l\u2019implacable logique de ce d\u00e9sir pr\u00eat \u00e0 tout \u00e0 la nullit\u00e9 pr\u00e9visible de ses contenus. C\u2019est dans cette distorsion entre l\u2019invention et l\u2019\u00e9nergie mise pour passer \u00e0 la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision dans le show de Jerry Langford et le n\u00e9ant hilare de ses sketchs que r\u00e9side le vertige n\u00e9gatif du film. Jerry Lewis envelopp\u00e9 sur un fauteuil de bandelettes scotchantes, muet, enfonc\u00e9 dans une sorte d\u2019accablement qui dessine la frange myst\u00e9rieuse du personnage car peut-\u00eatre est-ce ce miroir humain de Pupkin qui le jette dans cet abandon, traverse le film avec une m\u00e9lancolie un peu souffrante, sans jamais rien c\u00e9der d\u2019une distance parfois s\u00e8che, antipathie positive autour de laquelle tourbillonnent deux phal\u00e8nes infatigables, Pupkin, et Masha qui donne \u00e0 cette danse du scalp sa dimension sexuelle. Ce barnum mental culmine dans la r\u00e9ussite finale de l\u2019op\u00e9ration, o\u00f9 la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision manifeste son pouvoir d\u2019absorption illimit\u00e9e avec un cynisme parfaitement \u00e9gal.
