Neeraj Ghaywan \u00e9labore un r\u00e9cit choral o\u00f9 se croisent plusieurs histoires et personnages reli\u00e9s par les th\u00e8mes du deuil et de l\u2019amour impossible, tous \u00e9cras\u00e9s par le poids des castes et l\u2019hypocrisie morale et religieuse, \u00e0 B\u00e9nar\u00e8s dans la Vall\u00e9e du Gange. Le film s\u2019articule principalement autour de deux r\u00e9cits parall\u00e8les dans lesquels des jeunes couples sont s\u00e9par\u00e9s par la mort. Surpris par la police dans une chambre d\u2019h\u00f4tel avec une amie un \u00e9tudiant pr\u00e9f\u00e8re se suicider plut\u00f4t que de subir la honte d\u2019un scandale sexuel \u2013 les rapports avant le mariage sont interdits en Inde. La jeune femme et son p\u00e8re deviendront les victimes de l\u2019officier de policier responsable de l\u2019intervention meurtri\u00e8re, ignoble ma\u00eetre chanteur qui veut leur extorquer de l\u2019argent en \u00e9change de son silence.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019autre histoire met en sc\u00e8ne un jeune homme qui s\u2019occupe des rites fun\u00e9raires sur les bords du Gange et de la cr\u00e9mation des corps \u2013 Masaan veut dire \u00ab\u00a0b\u00fbcher\u00a0\u00bb en hindi &#8211; et qui tombe amoureux d\u2019une fille des castes sup\u00e9rieures, d\u2019abord incapable de lui avouer sa pauvre condition.<\/p>\n<p>La beaut\u00e9 du film parsem\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9clats po\u00e9tiques n\u2019\u00e9dulcore en rien la noirceur de son propos. Neeraj Ghaywan r\u00e9ussit \u00e0 \u00e9treindre une mati\u00e8re romanesque tr\u00e8s riche, par l\u2019interm\u00e9diaire d\u2019un sc\u00e9nario foisonnant et n\u00e9anmoins lin\u00e9aire, et d\u2019une mise en sc\u00e8ne \u00e0 la pudeur bienvenue. <em>Masaan<\/em> dresse un tableau peu reluisant de la condition f\u00e9minine en Inde, de la corruption et des in\u00e9galit\u00e9s sociales, dans un pays qui a pourtant connu un d\u00e9veloppement et une modernisation rapides au cours des derni\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies.
