Nous l\u2019avions d\u00e9couvert sur le tard avec l\u2019excellent <em>Guilty of Romance<\/em> diffus\u00e9 en 2013 sur ARTE, avant de visionner le film qui l\u2019avait fait remarquer sur la sc\u00e8ne internationale en 2001, <em>Suicide Club<\/em>, et quelques autres. Po\u00e8te avant d\u2019\u00eatre cin\u00e9aste, pourfendeur des r\u00e8gles et des genres populaires, Sono Sion est un auteur inclassable, un artiste adepte du happening cin\u00e9matographique, m\u00eame si l\u2019\u00e9tranget\u00e9 et un imaginaire foutraque semblent dominer une filmographie capable se r\u00e9server aussi des plages de tranquillit\u00e9 et de relatif classicisme. <em>The Land of Hope<\/em> sur la catastrophe nucl\u00e9aire de Fukushima, l\u2019un de ses films les moins int\u00e9ressants selon nous b\u00e9n\u00e9ficia pourtant d\u2019une distribution en salles en France sans doute \u00e0 cause de son sujet, tandis que <em>Suicide Club<\/em> ou <em>Love Exposure<\/em>, beaucoup plus enthousiasmants et repr\u00e9sentatifs de son style d\u00e9chain\u00e9 et baroque, durent se contenter d\u2019une sortie DVD. C\u2019est \u00e9galement le cas de <em>Why Don\u2019t You Play in Hell?<\/em>, qui confirme que Sono Sion, loin de s\u2019assagir, est toujours le grand cin\u00e9aste punk du cin\u00e9ma japonais, qu\u2019il n\u2019a pas froid aux yeux, sans pour autant sombrer dans la d\u00e9bilit\u00e9 trash et la provocation hideuse de certaines productions d\u00e9viantes nippones.<\/p>\n<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15163\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/files\/49_jigoku_sub5_5MB.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/files\/49_jigoku_sub5_5MB.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/files\/49_jigoku_sub5_5MB-420x280.jpg 420w, https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/files\/49_jigoku_sub5_5MB-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/files\/49_jigoku_sub5_5MB-580x387.jpg 580w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Why Don\u2019t You Play in Hell?<\/em> est un film hors normes sur le th\u00e8me de l\u2019amour passionnel du cin\u00e9ma, avec de nombreux \u00e9l\u00e9ments satiriques qui critiquent de l\u2019int\u00e9rieur la sous-culture pop, un peu \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re d\u2019un Frank Tashlin. L\u2019interminable carnage final, au cour duquel deux gangs rivaux de yakusas s\u2019entretuent devant les cam\u00e9ras d\u2019une \u00e9quipe de tournage, avec des hectolitres de sang d\u00e9vers\u00e9 et des d\u00e9membrements au sabre renvoie aux films de Kinji Fukasaku des ann\u00e9es 70 et aussi \u00e0 leurs parodies popularis\u00e9es par Miike, Tarantino (<em>Kill Bill<\/em>) et quelques autres. L\u2019originalit\u00e9 de Sono Sion ne consiste pas \u00e0 se complaire dans l\u2019exc\u00e8s et l\u2019outrance, mais \u00e0 proposer un m\u00e9ta film sur la violence et le cin\u00e9ma, en pointant du doigt la dimension quasi domestique des images dans notre vie et la fascination qu\u2019elles exercent sur nous, comme cette publicit\u00e9 au d\u00e9but du film dans laquelle une petite nymphette gesticule sur une chanson stupide. A l\u2019oppos\u00e9e de ces images de fabrication industrielle porteuses d\u2019une s\u00e9duction obsc\u00e8ne, les jeunes h\u00e9ros du film veulent produire un \u00ab\u00a0cin\u00e9ma gu\u00e9rilla\u00a0\u00bb, v\u00e9n\u00e8rent le 35mm et se r\u00e9unissent dans une salle de cin\u00e9ma d\u00e9saffect\u00e9e, suscitant l\u2019incompr\u00e9hension de leur maigre auditoire. Le cin\u00e9ma et le d\u00e9sir du cin\u00e9ma chez les masses, remplac\u00e9s par d\u2019autres formes de divertissements, est mort avant la r\u00e9alisation de leurs r\u00eaves. <em>Why Don\u2019t You Play in Hell?<\/em> surprend aussi bien pour son invention visuelle que pour l\u2019ambition de son sc\u00e9nario, qui m\u00eale sur une dizaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es plusieurs personnages appartenant aux mondes pour le moins \u00e9loign\u00e9s du cin\u00e9ma underground et la p\u00e8gre de Tokyo. Un collectif de jeunes adolescents apprentis cin\u00e9astes, les \u00ab\u00a0Fuck Bombers\u00a0\u00bb font le serment de r\u00e9volutionner l\u2019art cin\u00e9matographique. Dix ans plus tard ils ne sont parvenus qu\u2019\u00e0 mettre en bo\u00eete une bande annonce d\u2019un nanar d\u2019action avec des ninjas, sans jamais trouver de financement pour le r\u00e9aliser. Pendant ce temps un chef de clan doit \u00e0 la fois faire face \u00e0 ses ennemis yakuzas, \u00e0 la sortie de prison de sa femme apr\u00e8s avoir purg\u00e9 une peine de dix ans pour le meurtre sauvage de ses agresseurs et \u00e0 la disparition de sa fille, une starlette d\u00e9lur\u00e9e de la J-pop. Les p\u00e9rip\u00e9ties d\u00e9lirantes du film semblent s\u2019organiser pour permettre un calembour visuel qui r\u00e9sume le propos de Sono Sion, d\u00e9j\u00e0 illustr\u00e9 avant lui par d\u2019autres cin\u00e9astes postmodernes tels que Wim Wenders (<em>L\u2019Etat des choses<\/em>) ou Abel Ferrara (<em>Snake Eyes<\/em>)\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0to shoot\u00a0\u00bb en anglais, signifie \u00e0 la fois filmer avec une cam\u00e9ra et tuer par balles. L\u2019acte d\u2019enregistrer des images et celui de tirer des projectiles mortels peuvent \u00eatre confondus \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9crit mais aussi dans la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 \u2013 et dans un film, avec un appareil de prise de vues qui peut se confondre ou se joindre \u00e0 une arme \u00e0 feu, et transformer l\u2019objet film\u00e9 \u2013 normalement objet de d\u00e9sir ou d\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat \u2013 en cible. De cette constatation linguistique Sono Sion ne tire pas une r\u00e9flexion mortif\u00e8re sr la disparition du cin\u00e9ma (Wenders) mais un spectacle ravageur et iconoclaste, qui d\u00e9bouche sur une fuite en avant, exalt\u00e9e et d\u00e9risoire.
