Ulmer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Dans sa nouvelle collection \u00ab\u00a0perles noires\u00a0\u00bb Sidonis nous permet de d\u00e9couvrir enfin dans de bonnes conditions <em>L\u2019Impitoyable<\/em> (<em>Ruthless<\/em>, 1948), film mythique d\u2019un cin\u00e9aste qui ne l\u2019est pas moins, Edgar G. Ulmer. Mythique parce que ce titre \u00e9tait rarissime et visible seulement dans de mauvaises copies \u2013 je me souviens avoir fait l\u2019acquisition d\u2019une VHS portugaise dans les ann\u00e9es 90 \u2013 avant sa r\u00e9cente exhumation en DVD, mais sa r\u00e9putation \u00e9tait excellente aupr\u00e8s des cin\u00e9philes qui parlaient d\u2019un <em>Citizen Kane<\/em> de s\u00e9rie B qui n\u2019avait rien \u00e0 envier au chef-d\u2019\u0153uvre de Orson Welles. Mythique parce que <em>L\u2019Impitoyable<\/em> \u00e9tait cit\u00e9 parmi les films les plus importants d\u2019un cin\u00e9aste \u00e0 part, l\u2019extravagant, marginal et pourtant g\u00e9nial Edgar G. Ulmer, connu pour avoir sign\u00e9 des films incroyables pour les studios les plus fauch\u00e9s de Hollywood, s\u00e9ries plus proches du Z que du B qui rec\u00e8lent des tr\u00e9sors de po\u00e9sie et d\u2019intelligence.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>L\u2019Impitoyable<\/em> ne d\u00e9\u00e7oit en rien les attentes et s\u2019impose comme l\u2019un des meilleurs films de Ulmer, loin des bandes fantastiques et excentriques qui firent sa r\u00e9putation et pourtant parfaitement repr\u00e9sentatifs de son art et de son univers, car il existe une vision coh\u00e9rente qui se d\u00e9tache de l\u2019ensemble de l\u2019\u0153uvre du cin\u00e9aste, malgr\u00e9 ses apparences foutraques et disparates.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Les grands films de Ulmer sont des paraboles humanistes marqu\u00e9es par une approche spiritualiste.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ainsi <em>L\u2019Impitoyable<\/em> s\u2019ouvre-t-il sur un verset de l\u2019Evangile selon Marc :<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00ab\u00a0Quel profit en effet aura l\u2019homme d\u2019avoir gagn\u00e9 le monde entier et perdu son \u00e2me\u00a0?\u00a0\u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>L\u2019Impitoyable<\/em> est une fable sur l\u2019arrivisme et ses cons\u00e9quences (auto)destructrices. L\u2019un des meilleurs ex\u00e9g\u00e8tes de Ulmer, Jacques Lourcelles parle de \u00ab\u00a0morality play\u00a0\u00bb. Lors d\u2019une soir\u00e9e mondaine au cours de laquelle Horace W. Vendig vient de faire une donation de 25 millions \u00e0 des \u0153uvres de charit\u00e9 (\u00ab\u00a0pour la paix de son \u00e2me ou pour \u00e9chapper aux imp\u00f4ts\u00a0?\u00a0\u00bb, s\u2019interrogent cyniquement des banquiers pr\u00e9sents \u00e0 la r\u00e9ception) celui qui fut son ami Vic Lambdin pr\u00e9sente le richissime homme d\u2019affaires \u00e0 sa nouvelle compagne. S\u2019ensuit une conversation et une s\u00e9rie de flash-back adroitement amen\u00e9s qui dresse le portrait de Vendig, qui toute sa vie usera de son pouvoir de s\u00e9duction aupr\u00e8s des femmes pour acc\u00e9der \u00e0 toujours plus d\u2019argent et de pouvoir, trahissant ses amis et d\u00e9truisant ses adversaires\u2026 A la virtuosit\u00e9 du r\u00e9cit vient s\u2019ajouter l\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9gance de la mise en sc\u00e8ne, qui d\u00e9montre que Ulmer \u00e9tait un excellent cin\u00e9aste quand il b\u00e9n\u00e9ficiait de moyens confortables, soignant particuli\u00e8rement la direction artistique et les costumes de son film, description cr\u00e9dible du monde luxueux de la haute finance. L\u2019interpr\u00e9tation est remarquable : les nombreux personnages de cette saga balzacienne existent avec panache le temps d\u2019une ou deux sc\u00e8nes, et Sidney Greenstreet se taille \u00e9videmment la part du lion en milliardaire sudiste. Le premier flash back montre une sc\u00e8ne de noyade qui r\u00e9v\u00e8le d\u00e8s l\u2019enfance la v\u00e9ritable personnalit\u00e9 de Vendig ; le film se conclura par une sc\u00e8ne paroxystique au bord de la mer, confirmant l\u2019importance, symbolique et dramatique de l\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ment aquatique dans toute l\u2019\u0153uvre de Ulmer, \u00e0 l\u2019instar de son ma\u00eetre Friedrich W.
