Film plut\u00f4t rare et m\u00e9connu qui se r\u00e9v\u00e8le excellent, d\u00e9j\u00e0 tr\u00e8s repr\u00e9sentatif du talent de Germi et ancr\u00e9 dans une \u00e9poque, celle de l\u2019imm\u00e9diate apr\u00e8s-guerre en Italie, marqu\u00e9e par des questionnements moraux et un pessimisme foncier. Comme dans <em>Le Bandit<\/em> et <em>La Proie du d\u00e9sir<\/em>, pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment \u00e9tudi\u00e9s et r\u00e9alis\u00e9s \u00e0 la m\u00eame p\u00e9riode, la mort est au bout du chemin dans Le T\u00e9moin, sa trace impr\u00e8gne le film. Elle l\u2019est aussi au d\u00e9but, puisque le film commence par le proc\u00e8s du personnage principal accus\u00e9 de meurtre. L\u2019une des particularit\u00e9s de ce film \u00e9tonnant consiste \u00e0 s\u2019int\u00e9resser \u00e0 un crime sans jamais montrer de violence \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cran, tout en en \u00e9tudiant, du d\u00e9but \u00e0 la fin, les cons\u00e9quences sur la destin\u00e9e des personnages. Un homme suspect\u00e9 de meurtre risque la peine de mort en raison d\u2019un t\u00e9moin \u00e0 charge de derni\u00e8re minute. Un vieil employ\u00e9 de bureau pr\u00e9tend en effet avoir aper\u00e7u l\u2019accus\u00e9 non loin du lieu et de l\u2019heure du crime. Mais il s\u2019av\u00e8re que son bien le plus pr\u00e9cieux, une montre \u00e0 gousset, retardait et annule son t\u00e9moignage. Le suspect b\u00e9n\u00e9ficie d\u2019un non lieu.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019homme sort de prison, bien d\u00e9cid\u00e9 \u00e0 refaire sa vie. Il rencontre une jeune fille pauvre, lui demande de la suivre \u00e0 la ville et la propose en mariage. Mais le vieil employ\u00e9 r\u00e9apparait sur son chemin, provoquant son \u00e9nervement et r\u00e9veillant en lui une angoisse qui est celle de la culpabilit\u00e9. La v\u00e9rit\u00e9 finira par \u00e9clater, d\u00e9truisant le moindre espoir.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14532\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/fr\/olivierpere\/files\/01056002.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"454\" height=\"655\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/files\/01056002.jpg 454w, https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/files\/01056002-194x280.jpg 194w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pietro Germi, avant d\u2019acc\u00e9der \u00e0 la c\u00e9l\u00e9brit\u00e9 internationale avec des com\u00e9dies sarcastiques qui ne sont pas ses meilleurs films, a sign\u00e9 dans les ann\u00e9es 40 et 50 des drames sociaux qui empruntent beaucoup \u00e0 l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re du cin\u00e9ma policier. <em>Traqu\u00e9 dans la ville<\/em> par exemple est un fleuron du film noir \u00e0 l\u2019italienne, tandis que <em>Au nom de la loi<\/em>, sur la mafia sicilienne, est trait\u00e9 comme un western. D\u00e8s son premier film, Germi part d\u2019une histoire criminelle pour dresser le portrait moral de l\u2019Italie au sortir de la guerre, entre corruption, mis\u00e8re et volont\u00e9 de s\u2019absoudre de la d\u00e9cennie fasciste. <em>Le T\u00e9moin<\/em> fut produit par une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9e dans les sujets religieux, ou dans les films accordant une place importante \u00e0 la spiritualit\u00e9. Le film de Germi propose en effet un cheminement vers la r\u00e9demption, avec les th\u00e8mes du p\u00each\u00e9 et du salut de l\u2019\u00e2me.
