Louise, la gouvernante, et Dave, chauffeur de la maison, d\u00e9cident d&rsquo;en profiter pour enlever l&rsquo;enfant. Mais celui-ci, passionn\u00e9 par les animaux, vient de ramener d&rsquo;un magasin sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9 un mamba noir, serpent tr\u00e8s dangereux qu&rsquo;on lui a vendu par erreur. Ce thriller qu\u2019on qualifierait aujourd\u2019hui de \u00ab\u00a0home invasion\u00a0\u00bb emprunte \u00e0 la fois aux codes du film d\u2019horreur et \u00e0 ceux du polar \u00ab\u00a0hard boiled\u00a0\u00bb tel qu\u2019il s\u2019en produisait en Angleterre dans les ann\u00e9es 70. Le cocktail explosif gangsters sans piti\u00e9 plus bestiole mortelle enferm\u00e9s avec un enfant asthmatique et un vieillard malade dans une maison encercl\u00e9e par la police g\u00e9n\u00e8re un suspens efficace. L\u2019esth\u00e9tique de <em>Venin<\/em> \u2013 usage fr\u00e9quent des objectifs \u00e0 courte focale, vision subjective d\u00e9form\u00e9e du mamba en mode attaque \u2013 trahit l\u2019influence des films de genre britanniques de la d\u00e9cennie pr\u00e9c\u00e9dente, ce qui n\u2019est pas surprenant puisque Pier Haggard avait r\u00e9alis\u00e9 en 1971 un petit classique de l\u2019\u00e9pouvante british, produit par la compagnie Trigon, <em>La Nuit des mal\u00e9fices<\/em>, sa seule r\u00e9ussite notable avec Venin dont il reprit la r\u00e9alisation en cours de route, sans avoir particip\u00e9 \u00e0 sa pr\u00e9paration \u2013 le malchanceux Tobe Hooper fut en effet d\u00e9barqu\u00e9 par la production quelques jours apr\u00e8s le d\u00e9but du tournage, pour d\u2019obscures raison (d\u00e9pression nerveuse\u00a0?) il faut dire que les coulisses du film furent sans doute aussi \u00e9prouvantes \u2013 sinon davantage \u2013 que les p\u00e9rip\u00e9ties relat\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cran. La r\u00e9union en huis clos d\u2019acteurs aussi caract\u00e9riels que Klaus Kinski, Oliver Reed (qui se ha\u00efrent cordialement, normal), Sarah Miles, Nicol Williamson, plus le v\u00e9t\u00e9ran Sterling Hayden, fatigu\u00e9 dans son dernier r\u00f4le au cin\u00e9ma provoquera des tensions et accrochages bien plus violents et dangereux que tous les serpents d\u2019Afrique. Le couple d\u2019escrocs prol\u00e9taires cockney form\u00e9 par Oliver Reed et Susan George, parfait en domestiques retors, exprime une forte opposition de classes en face de la famille am\u00e9ricaine bourgeoise qu\u2019ils ont infiltr\u00e9e et qu\u2019ils m\u00e9prisent, m\u00eame si cette dimension politique n\u2019est gu\u00e8re exploit\u00e9e par le film qui s\u2019oriente rapidement vers le suspens pur et dur. Le sc\u00e9nario est sign\u00e9 Robert Carrington, \u00e9crivain de cin\u00e9ma essentiellement connu pour un autre huis clos paroxystique, <em>Seule dans la nuit<\/em> de Terence Young en 1967.<em> Venin<\/em>, s\u00e9rie B de luxe, est produite par le new yorkais Martin Bregman, qui produisit une autre c\u00e9l\u00e8bre prise d\u2019otages avec si\u00e8ge de la police (<em>Un apr\u00e8s-midi de chien<\/em> de Sidney Lumet en 1975) et dont le film suivant imm\u00e9diatement <em>Venin<\/em> r\u00e9servera \u00e0 son antih\u00e9ros la m\u00eame fin sanguinolente et d\u00e9gringolante qu\u2019au m\u00e9chant terroriste international interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 par Klaus Kinski (photo en t\u00eate de texte) : <em>Scarface<\/em> de Brian De Palma.
