Elle a toujours travaill\u00e9 entre fiction et documentaire, souvent autobiographique. Ici la greffe entre observation du monde et esquisse romanesque est particuli\u00e8rement r\u00e9ussie.<\/p>\n<p>Naomi Kawase signe un film tr\u00e8s \u00e9mouvant et po\u00e9tique autour d\u2019un couple d\u2019adolescents sur l\u2019\u00eele Amami Oshima, entre \u00e9veil sensuel, communion avec la nature et drames familiaux. Fascin\u00e9e par l\u2019\u00e9cosyst\u00e8me unique de cette \u00eele subtropicale du Japon entour\u00e9e d\u2019abondants coraux d\u2019o\u00f9 sa famille est originaire, Naomi Kawase explore le cycle de la vie, de la mort et de la reproduction \u00e0 travers l\u2019histoire de Ten, un gar\u00e7on de quatorze ans et de son amie Kyoko.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Le film d\u00e9bute par la d\u00e9couverte d\u2019un cadavre d\u2019homme sur une plage, rejet\u00e9 par les vagues apr\u00e8s un violent typhon. Il se poursuit avec la lente agonie d\u2019une femme atteinte d\u2019un cancer qui pr\u00e9f\u00e8re mourir chez elle, en compagnie de son mari, ancien surfeur, et de sa fille Kyoko, son lit de souffrance plac\u00e9 devant un arbre centenaire qui tr\u00f4ne dans leur jardin. La mort de la m\u00e8re, entour\u00e9e de sa famille et de ses voisines qui entonne des chants traditionnels compte parmi les plus belles et plus intenses sc\u00e8nes du film.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019un des aspects primordiaux du travail de Naomi Kawase est celui de la communion de l\u2019homme avec les \u00e9l\u00e9ments naturels comme l\u2019eau, les v\u00e9g\u00e9taux et les animaux, h\u00e9rit\u00e9e des croyances ancestrales nippones.<\/p>\n<p>On retrouve ce th\u00e8me, ainsi que celui du deuil et de la fronti\u00e8re entre la vie et la mort dans <i>Still the Water<\/i> projet d\u2019inspiration chamanique (croyance dans les dieux de la nature), qui m\u00eale sensualit\u00e9 et spiritualit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Kawase r\u00e9ussit particuli\u00e8rement les portraits des deux adolescents\u00a0: la jeune fille confront\u00e9e \u00e0 la mort de sa m\u00e8re en m\u00eame temps que ses premiers \u00e9mois sentimentaux et sexuels\u00a0; le gar\u00e7on qui n\u2019est pas encore pr\u00eat pour tomber amoureux, emp\u00eatr\u00e9 dans sa crise \u0153dipienne et cherchant \u00e0 comprendre les raisons du d\u00e9part de son p\u00e8re, qu\u2019il retrouve bri\u00e8vement \u00e0 Tokyo (autre tr\u00e8s belle s\u00e9quence en rupture avec le rythme de vie autarcique sur l\u2019\u00eele.)
