Sarafian \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de 83 ans.<\/p>\n<p>Cin\u00e9aste trop discret, disparu des radars d\u00e8s la fin des ann\u00e9es 80, Richard C. Sarafian n\u2019a pas r\u00e9alis\u00e9 beaucoup de films, et encore moins de bons. Issu de la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision, contemporain des Penn, Peckinpah, Altman (qui fut son beau-fr\u00e8re\u00a0!) et Frankenheimer, il n\u2019eut pas la chance de ses derniers et ne parvint pas \u00e0 s\u2019imposer \u00e0 Hollywood, malgr\u00e9 une forte personnalit\u00e9 et un v\u00e9ritable talent. On lui doit pourtant deux des meilleurs films am\u00e9ricains du d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 70, relectures des th\u00e8mes de la fronti\u00e8re et de l\u2019h\u00e9ro\u00efsme chers au cin\u00e9ma classique\u00a0: <i>Point limite z\u00e9ro<\/i> (photo en t\u00eate de texte) et <i>Le Convoi sauvage <\/i>qui racontent \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s la m\u00eame chose (et de la m\u00eame fa\u00e7on, avec retours en arri\u00e8re et ambitions m\u00e9taphysiques).<\/p>\n<p>Natif de New York, d\u2019origine arm\u00e9nienne, Sarafian d\u00e9bute sa carri\u00e8re \u00e0 la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision o\u00f9 il r\u00e9alise de tr\u00e8s nombreux \u00e9pisodes de s\u00e9ries \u00e0 succ\u00e8s entre 1961 et 1968. Apr\u00e8s trois longs m\u00e9trages de cin\u00e9ma \u00e0 la carri\u00e8re confidentielle, Sarafian r\u00e9alise le formidable <i>Point limite z\u00e9ro<\/i> (<i>Vanishing Point<\/i>, 1971), chef-d\u2019\u0153uvre de la contre culture am\u00e9ricaine, road movie d\u00e9finitif aussi important, sinon davantage, et mieux r\u00e9alis\u00e9 que <i>Easy Rider<\/i>, <i>Macadam \u00e0 deux voies<\/i>, <i>Sugarland Express<\/i> ou <i>Electra Glide in Blue<\/i>. Kowalski (Barry Newman) est un ancien flic, v\u00e9t\u00e9ran du Vietnam, devenu pilote professionnel et convoyeur, qui accepte de relever un pari stupide\u00a0: rallier Denver \u00e0 San Francisco en voiture en moins de quinze heures. Bourr\u00e9 d\u2019amph\u00e9tamines il se lance dans une course effr\u00e9n\u00e9e \u00e0 travers l\u2019Am\u00e9rique rurale, bient\u00f4t poursuivi par la police de la route. C\u2019est un voyage dans l\u2019espace et aussi dans le temps, propice \u00e0 des bribes de souvenirs sur ses vies pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes, entre hallucinations et d\u00e9sillusions. L\u2019homme va revenir \u00e0 la vie gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 sa connaissance de la nature et la bienveillance de cette derni\u00e8re (admirables s\u00e9quences panth\u00e9istes) et partir \u00e0 la recherche de ses anciens compagnons pour se venger. <i>Le Convoi sauvage<\/i> est c\u00e9l\u00e8bre pour ses images de trappeurs traversant l\u2019ouest sauvage \u00e0 bord d\u2019un bateau tir\u00e9 par des chevaux. Ces visions po\u00e9tiques et un discours philosophique qu\u2019on pourrait qualifier de spinoziste font du film un titre \u00e0 part parmi la vague des n\u00e9o westerns de l\u2019\u00e9poque. Le convoi est dirig\u00e9 par le cin\u00e9aste John Huston, sans doute un mod\u00e8le pour Sarafian, et dont l\u2019interpr\u00e9tation \u00e9voque le capitaine Achab de Melville. <i>Le Convoi sauvage<\/i>, malgr\u00e9 ses qualit\u00e9s, ne rencontra pas le m\u00eame succ\u00e8s qu\u2019<i>Un homme nomm\u00e9 cheval <\/i>(avec la m\u00eame vedette Richard Harris, autre r\u00e9cit de survie en territoire hostile) ou <i>Jeremiah Johnson<\/i> de Sydney Pollack, autre western sur les \u00ab\u00a0mountain men\u00a0\u00bb. Sarafian r\u00e9alise deux ans plus tard <i>Le Fant\u00f4me de Cat Dancing <\/i>(<i>The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing<\/i>). Ce film de commande au sc\u00e9nario plus classique, western romantique sur une jeune femme captur\u00e9e par des pilleurs de trains est une r\u00e9ussite mineure qui offre \u00e0 Burt Reynolds un r\u00f4le plus subtil que d\u2019habitude. <i>Le Fant\u00f4me de Cat Dancing <\/i>connut une gen\u00e8se tourment\u00e9e avec la mort myst\u00e9rieuse de l\u2019assistant (et amant) de l\u2019actrice principale Sarah Miles sur le tournage et de nombreux conflits entre Sarafian et la production. Les films suivants, entre d\u00e9sastres commerciaux, commandes obscures et retours \u00e0 la case t\u00e9l\u00e9 \u2013 nous n\u2019avons vu aucun titre de cette p\u00e9riode &#8211;\u00a0 confirmeront le d\u00e9clin inexorable du cin\u00e9aste devenu maudit aux yeux des d\u00e9cideurs des studios. Il n\u2019emp\u00eache que les cin\u00e9philes se souviendront de Richard C.
