En 1947, \u00e0 Chypre, des milliers de r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s juifs, en chemin pour la Terre Sainte, sont arr\u00eat\u00e9s par les Anglais et parqu\u00e9s dans des camps. Ari Ben Canaann (Paul Newman), un r\u00e9sistant, s\u2019indigne de ces arrestations et prend la t\u00eate d\u2019un p\u00e9riple qui les m\u00e8nera jusqu\u2019aux fronti\u00e8res de la Palestine. Exodus est une adaptation du roman \u00e9ponyme de Leon Uris (inspir\u00e9 par des \u00e9v\u00e9nements r\u00e9els) par le sc\u00e9nariste Dalton Trumbo. C\u2019est avec ce film que Trumbo sort officiellement de la liste noire, puisque son nom appara\u00eet au g\u00e9n\u00e9rique, alors qu\u2019il \u00e9tait contraint de travailler sous pseudonyme depuis qu\u2019il avait \u00e9t\u00e9 condamn\u00e9 en 1947 \u00e0 onze mois de prison pour \u00ab\u00a0activit\u00e9s anti-am\u00e9ricaines\u00a0\u00bb, puis r\u00e9duit au ch\u00f4mage et \u00e0 la clandestinit\u00e9 tant que dura la terrible chasse aux communistes \u00e0 Hollywood. La m\u00eame ann\u00e9e, quelques mois plus tard, Kirk Douglas accepte \u00e9galement de mentionner le nom de Trumbo au g\u00e9n\u00e9rique du film qu\u2019il produit et interpr\u00e8te, <i>Spartacus<\/i> de Stanley Kubrick. Mais surtout, l\u2019art de Preminger est un art de l\u2019invisibilit\u00e9, ce qui a certainement frein\u00e9 sa reconnaissance comme auteur. Preminger est sans doute le cin\u00e9aste \u00e0 avoir pouss\u00e9 \u00e0 son plus haut degr\u00e9 de perfection les recherches sur le montage interdit, en cr\u00e9ant des films non pas uniquement compos\u00e9s de plans-s\u00e9quences, comme<em> La Corde<\/em> d\u2019Hitchcock, mais donnant cette illusion de continuit\u00e9 par un travail sur la fluidit\u00e9 et l\u2019harmonie \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur des plans et des s\u00e9quences. Preminger est le cin\u00e9aste classique par excellence, car son art m\u00e9prise l\u2019exp\u00e9rimentation voyante et met la ma\u00eetrise de l\u2019\u00e9criture cin\u00e9matographique au profit de l\u2019\u00e9vidence, du r\u00e9alisme et de la dramaturgie. <em>Exodus<\/em> (le plus beau et le plus repr\u00e9sentatif des chefs-d\u2019\u0153uvre de Preminger des ann\u00e9es 60, par son ambition mais aussi son go\u00fbt des grands sujets audacieux susceptibles de cr\u00e9er la controverse, ici le sionisme) s\u2019\u00e9coule ainsi comme un long fleuve majestueux, \u00e9pousant le th\u00e8me du film sur l\u2019amplitude de l\u2019histoire qui draine les conflits et les destins personnels. Le film contient plusieurs morceaux de bravoure, et les plus m\u00e9morables ne sont pas forc\u00e9ment les plus spectaculaires, bien \u00e0 au contraire. Pour une seule sc\u00e8ne, <i>Exodus<\/i> m\u00e9rite sa place au panth\u00e9on des grands films de l\u2019histoire du cin\u00e9ma\u00a0: celle o\u00f9 le jeune Dov Landau (Sal Mineo), interrog\u00e9 par un chef de l\u2019Irgoun, finit par avouer l\u2019inavouable\u00a0: enr\u00f4l\u00e9 de force dans les sonderkommandos \u00e0 Auschwitz, il fut contraint de participer au processus de la solution finale contre son peuple et de servir de prostitu\u00e9e pour les soldats allemands.
