Le cin\u00e9ma am\u00e9ricain n\u2019a pas attendu Brian De Palma pour se livrer \u00e0 des relectures plus ou moins mani\u00e9ristes, r\u00e9v\u00e9rencieuses ou parodiques de l\u2019\u0153uvre d\u2019Alfred Hitchcock. Il y eut d\u2019abord les premiers James Bond de Terence Young qui empruntaient beaucoup \u00e0 <i>La Mort aux trousses<\/i>, puis bien s\u00fbr les com\u00e9dies d\u2019espionnage sophistiqu\u00e9es <i>Charade <\/i>et <i>Arabesque <\/i>de Stanley Donen qui se pr\u00e9sentaient ouvertement comme des pastiches des chefs-d\u2019\u0153uvre d\u2019Hitchcock, ce qui constituait d\u2019ailleurs leur limite. Billy Wilder (<i>T\u00e9moin \u00e0 charge<\/i>), Blake Edwards (<i>Top secret<\/i>) et quelques autres se mesur\u00e8rent aussi au ma\u00eetre du suspense avec des r\u00e9sultats parfois admirables (<i>Top secret<\/i> est le chef-d\u2019\u0153uvre inconnu du cin\u00e9aste de <i>La Panth\u00e8re rose<\/i>.)<\/p>\n<p><i>Transamerica Express<\/i> est une com\u00e9die polici\u00e8re \u00e9crite par Colin Higgins et mise en sc\u00e8ne par Arthur Hiller qui rend hommage avec plus de modestie que Donen mais aussi beaucoup d\u2019efficacit\u00e9 aux thrillers d\u2019Hitchcock, notamment <i>Une femme dispara\u00eet<\/i> et <i>L\u2019Inconnu du Nord Express<\/i> (pour le d\u00e9cor du train, l\u2019escamotage d\u2019un personnage et les mauvaises rencontres) mais surtout <i>La Mort aux trousses<\/i> avec son h\u00e9ros ordinaire embarqu\u00e9 malgr\u00e9 lui dans une aventure rocambolesque, avec ce m\u00e9lange de sexe et de danger qui faisait le piment des films d\u2019Hitchcock interpr\u00e9t\u00e9s par Cary Grant (<i>Soup\u00e7ons<\/i>, <i>Les Encha\u00een\u00e9s<\/i>, <i>La Mort aux trousses<\/i>, <i>La Main au collet<\/i>.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/files\/2013\/07\/21003936_20130507125953537.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10302\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/files\/2013\/07\/21003936_20130507125953537.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/files\/2013\/07\/21003936_20130507125953537.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/files\/2013\/07\/21003936_20130507125953537-419x280.jpg 419w, https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/files\/2013\/07\/21003936_20130507125953537-580x386.jpg 580w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pendant un trajet en train entre Chicago et Los Angeles, un \u00e9diteur timor\u00e9 qui a choisi ce moyen de transport parce qu\u2019il d\u00e9teste l\u2019avion rencontre l&rsquo;amour en la personne d\u2019une s\u00e9duisante voyageuse. Sur le point de conclure dans un wagon couchette, il est interrompu par la vision fugace d\u2019un cadavre expuls\u00e9 par la fen\u00eatre. Incapable de fournir des preuves aux autorit\u00e9s, il se retrouve poursuivi par des gangsters et suspect\u00e9 par la police, \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur et \u00e0 l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur du train.<\/p>\n<p><i>Transamerica Express<\/i> ne sombre jamais dans la parodie, et traite s\u00e9rieusement, du moins dans sa premi\u00e8re partie (avant l\u2019apparition de Richard Pryor en comparse humoristique du h\u00e9ros) un ressort dramatique souvent mis en sc\u00e8ne par Hitchcock\u00a0: le faux coupable et le t\u00e9moin que personne ne croit. Ici la dr\u00f4lerie vient du d\u00e9calage entre le h\u00e9ros hitchcockien classique et l\u2019interpr\u00e8te de <i>Transamerica Express<\/i>, Gene Wilder, devenu une vedette gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ses r\u00f4les chez Mel Brooks (qui allait un an plus tard r\u00e9aliser son propre pastiche hitchcockien, le navrant <em>Grand Frisson<\/em>.) Gene Wilder est physiquement une parodie de Cary Grant ou James Stewart, d\u00e9pourvu de leur pouvoir de s\u00e9duction mais expert en maladresses, gaffes et quiproquos. <i>Transamerica Express<\/i> est repr\u00e9sentatif d\u2019une p\u00e9riode hollywoodienne d\u00e9barrass\u00e9e de tout glamour, o\u00f9 les nouvelles stars viennent de la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision, du cabaret ou du cin\u00e9ma ind\u00e9pendant. Un virage trivial emprunt\u00e9 par Hitchcock lui-m\u00eame dans son dernier film <i>Complot de famille<\/i>, exact contemporain de <i>Transamerica Express<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019irruption du personnage jou\u00e9 par Richard Pryor, alors vedette de stand up extr\u00eamement populaire dans la communaut\u00e9 noire, c\u00e9l\u00e8bre pour ses provocations verbales, est l\u2019autre originalit\u00e9 de <i>Transamerica Express<\/i>. Il s\u2019agit de son premier grand r\u00f4le dans une grosse production. Pryor fait basculer le film dans la bouffonnerie et l\u2019irr\u00e9v\u00e9rence, par sa mani\u00e8re unique d\u2019interpr\u00e9ter ce petit voleur, sympathique et d\u00e9contract\u00e9, alli\u00e9 providentiel de Gene Wilder\u00a0: le bourgeois et le prol\u00e9taire, le blanc et le noir, le timide et le baratineur\u2026 Le couple Wilder-Pryor fonctionne si bien qu\u2019il se reformera dans d\u2019autres com\u00e9dies la d\u00e9cennie suivante, sans obtenir le m\u00eame succ\u00e8s.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10303\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/files\/2013\/07\/1326892171_ea9037581348bc89e46063a320694a2f.png\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10303\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10303\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/files\/2013\/07\/1326892171_ea9037581348bc89e46063a320694a2f.png\" alt=\"Gene Wilder et Richard Pryor\" width=\"1280\" height=\"672\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/files\/2013\/07\/1326892171_ea9037581348bc89e46063a320694a2f.png 1280w, https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/files\/2013\/07\/1326892171_ea9037581348bc89e46063a320694a2f-533x280.png 533w, https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/files\/2013\/07\/1326892171_ea9037581348bc89e46063a320694a2f-1024x537.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/olivierpere\/files\/2013\/07\/1326892171_ea9037581348bc89e46063a320694a2f-580x304.png 580w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10303\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gene Wilder et Richard Pryor<\/p><\/div>\n<p>La sc\u00e8ne drolatique o\u00f9 Pryor grime Wilder en noir pour leur permettre d\u2019\u00e9chapper \u00e0 un contr\u00f4le de police, et lui explique en quelques minutes comment se faire passer pour un \u00ab\u00a0fr\u00e8re\u00a0\u00bb est presque un document d\u2019\u00e9poque, aujourd\u2019hui impensable dans un film de studio, pour cause de \u00ab\u00a0politiquement correct\u00a0\u00bb, y compris dans un sc\u00e9nario au message ouvertement d\u00e9mocrate.<\/p>\n<p>Derniers \u00e9l\u00e9ments notables de cet agr\u00e9able divertissement qui fut un gros succ\u00e8s au box-office, ses cascades acrobatiques \u2013 sur terre, sur rails et dans les airs &#8211; h\u00e9rit\u00e9es des classiques burlesques du muet et sa sc\u00e8ne finale emprunt\u00e9e au cin\u00e9ma catastrophe, un genre alors en vogue \u00e0 Hollywood.
