Language versions

  • Selecting the titles for the different language versions of a programme is an editorial decision. Often the literal translation of the original title into another language does not correspond to the original meaning. Due to differences in linguistic usage or cultural meaning, literal translations are not always appropriate. Therefore titles are adapted to the expression and the tonality of the target language.

  • When translating subtitles of a programme for another language version, editorial considerations play an important role.

In order for ease of reading, text cuts may also be made.

  • The language of the website can be changed in the right upper corner with the little downward arrow. Once you’ve selected your language, all programmes available in the chosen language will appear. Same for the app: Tap on the little gear icon in the right upper corner of your ARTE app and choose the language you wish.

You can also change the language on a programme directly, by clicking on the little speech bubble icon (or gear icon in the app) at the bottom-right of each video. On smart TV, you can change the language at the bottom of the page.

Unfortunately, due to distribution rights restrictions, not all programmes are available in all language versions and in all territories.

  • Most programmes are available on the digital channels in German and French. For the other language versions (original version with subtitles in English, Spanish, Polish or Italian), please check the respective website on arte.tv by changing the language version in the right upper corner of the website.

  • On arte.tv you can change a programme to any language you want, if it is available. Unfortunately it is not always possible to provide a programme in its original language because we do not have full distribution rights. We are trying our best to obtain as many distribution rights as possible.
