ARTE celebrates 30 years since the signing of its founding treaty between France and Germany!

ARTE is a symbol of Franco-German friendship. The project, which had been championed since 1988 by French President François Mitterrand and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, came to fruition on 2 October 1990, when an Interstate Treaty was signed between France and the German Länder.

ARTE GEIE inaugurates its new headquarters in Strasbourg, close to existing European institutions. The building is designed by the Franco-German architectural team of Hans Struhk and Paul Maechel.

ARTE develops partnerships in Europe, signing a cooperation agreement with Belgian public service broadcaster RTBF (Radio-télévision belge francophone). Within the context of this partnership an own window ARTE Belgique hab been scheduled between 2006 and 2014: magazines and documentaries produced by the RTBF were broadcast on ARTE in French and also in Dutch.

ARTE on air
30 May 1992

ARTE goes on air on the evening of the 30th May 1992.  From its base in Strasbourg, the channel transmits its first simultaneous analogue transmission to most households on both sides of the Rhine.
In France in May from 5pm via satellite (TDF 1-2) and in September from 7pm on analogue terrestrial network (Telcom 2B satellite) for 72% households. In Germany via DFS1 Copernicus and the Astra 1D satellite from 1994 for an extra 6 million households.
