Scarcely any other opera house is as tradition-conscious as is the Vienna State Opera. Its annual programme regularly boasts some sixty productions – not to forget the world-famous ball. Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss and Herbert von Karajan were all active at the “Haus am Ring.” There they conducted the orchestra of the Staatsoper, whose musicians would later regroup as the world-famous Vienna Philharmonic.
