Founded on the boulevard Unter den Linden in 1742 at the behest of King Frederick II of Prussia, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden is one of the German capital’s most illustrious cultural institutions. Daniel Barenboim has been its general music director since 1992. In 2000 he was elected chief conductor for life by the Staatskapelle Berlin.
