Having men and women pray in the same space is quite rare outside of Mecca. And it’s just one of the many reasons the Ibn Rushd-Goethe Mosque in Berlin has come under fire from conservative Muslims. Its founder, lawyer and feminist Seyran Ates, says hostility and threats are part of everyday life in the small community. Now that photos of the mosque have been found in the homes of suspected Islamic State group members, security has become paramount.
