Gabon is so rich in wildlife it's a hotspot for new viruses and bacteria to jump the species barrier and cross over to humans. Ebola, HIV and COVID-19 all started off in animals.
Scientists have decided to recruit traditional hunters to monitor wildlife for any signs of worrying new pathogens. As they hunt to feed their villages, they also feed the researchers valuable data. This is the frontline of the next pandemic.
