Constitutional judges are set to decide whether or not Poland will bend to European law, as all Member States are required to do, or follow its own national laws first and foremost instead. The legal equivalent of a Polexit would be a blow to many human rights activists in the country. The ruling would place Poland in opposition to many key European values, such as press freedom, and refugee rights.

Located between Kiev and Chernihiv in northern Ukraine, Velyka Doroha has also been scarred by the war. Half of its 700 inhabitants fled, and the village was occupied by Russian troops. Since their withdrawal, the mayor of Velyka Doroha has been taking stock of the damage, hoping that it can all be compensated. At the beginning of March, Tetiana spent a night in the Kyiv metro with her four-month-old daughter to shelter from the bombing. A journalist photographed her breastfeeding her baby, and the photo went viral on social media, inspiring a Ukrainian artist to paint a portrait of this modern Madonna. Lysychansk in eastern Ukraine, is now at the heart of the Russian army's offensive on the Donbass. Many residential areas have been hit, and even ambulance drivers are struggling to carry out their duties: going out on the street has become too dangerous. Prisca, Marie-Jeanne and Concessa say they survived the Rwandan genocide and sought safety in refugee camps, only to be repeatedly raped and abused by the French soldiers sent there to protect them. All describe similar horrors: abduction from their tent, the gang rapes, and the photos of the assaults taken by the soldiers. “We naively thought that the white man was a saviour, that he would bring peace,” sighs one of the women. While French army denies all accusations of rape, the three women filed a complaint with the French courts in 2004 and 2012. The investigation is now at a standstill.
