Otello is widely viewed as the greatest and most profound work in Giuseppe Verdi’s outstanding operatic oeuvre. Once interpreted as a parable about love, intrigue and jealousy, recent stagings have frequently sparked angry debate around racism and cultural identity.
Keith Warner’s production may seem at first to be a refined offering for gourmets of the genre. In fact it is a cogent lesson in how everyday racism works by nudging people into racist stereotypes. In 2017 Jonas Kaufmann gave his debut performance in one of Giuseppe Verdi’s toughest tenor roles. Maria Agresta is heard as Desdemona, while Marco Vratonga plays Iago. The work is conducted by the Royal Opera’s music director Antonio Pappano.

Salome tries to seduce him and on being rebuffed, forces her stepfather to serve her the prophet’s head on a silver platter.
