At the beginning of the 20th century, five-year-old Albert Cohen arrived in Marseille. His family had fled a pogrom in Corfu, and France became his new home. The future writer spent much of his youth in the city. Cohen's autobiographical works, such as “My Mother's Book”, often talk of his childhood experiences of anti-Semitism, but the Mediterranean is also ubiquitous, taking on a metaphorical maternal role.
