Kosovo has been independent since 2008, but the north is still claimed by Serbia. In Mitrovica, the Serbian community lives on the north bank of the river that divides the city, with Kosovar Albanians on the south bank. This is where the headquarters of the Trepca group, once one of the most prosperous companies in Yugoslavia, is located. Except that the mining group's sites are as divided as the city and the country as a whole.
