Switzerland is seen as the reservoir of Europe, as four of the continent's largest rivers have their source in the country. But warmer winters, as a result of climate change, mean less meltwater is produced, and unusually warm temperatures in spring are also melting the snow faster. Many mountain farmers have run out of water by June and alpine farms are having to be supplied with water by helicopter.

These four girls have made the fight against environmental damage a personal one. And for good reason – they suffer its consequences on a daily basis. In Senegal, a country badly affected by water shortages, Fatou spends hours each day fetching water, hours when she should be studying. Gagan, the daughter of farmers in Punjab, India, is against agricultural slash-and-burn, which causes serious lung problems. Eleven-year-old Sabyah from Australia points out the link between the coal industry and the slow disappearance of the Great Barrier Reef. Finally, Nina takes a stand against the ravages of plastic waste that overwhelm her country, Indonesia.

Prisca, Marie-Jeanne and Concessa say they survived the Rwandan genocide and sought safety in refugee camps, only to be repeatedly raped and abused by the French soldiers sent there to protect them. All describe similar horrors: abduction from their tent, the gang rapes, and the photos of the assaults taken by the soldiers. “We naively thought that the white man was a saviour, that he would bring peace,” sighs one of the women. While French army denies all accusations of rape, the three women filed a complaint with the French courts in 2004 and 2012. The investigation is now at a standstill.
