Becoming Swiss: Mission impossible?
Switzerland's naturalisation procedure is the toughest in Europe and, even for those born there, can be like navigating an obstacle course. As an added barrier, decisions can seem arbitrary thanks to the federal system – applicants stand a better chance of becoming Swiss in Geneva than they do in Nyon, or in German-speaking Switzerland. This Russian roulette-style system can also make a good hiding place for racism and xenophobia.
