50 kilometres from the continent, the tiny island of Heligoland is a German outpost in the North Sea. It is home to numerous bird species and serves as a breeding spot for seals. Scientists and conservationists are looking for ways to preserve the local biodiversity, while continuing to keep the island open for tourism.
