The Adventures of ManuscriptsMozart's Don Giovanni
When he died on December 5, 1791 in Vienna, Mozart left almost nine hundred works across all the musical genres of his time. Don Giovanni, premiered in Prague in 1787, is one of his most famous operas. His widow Constance sold his manuscript to a German publisher. In London in 1855, French singer Pauline Viardot sold her jewellery to buy it for a small fortune. Upon her return to Paris, she kept the manuscript in a custom-made box and showed it off to her cultured friends. In 1902, she donated it to the National Conservatory of Paris. The manuscript is now at the National Library of France.
