The first international Berlinale film festival took place on 6th June, 1951. The enthusiasm for the films and the stars was immediate. For visitors from East Berlin, screenings were organized at a reduced price in a separate room. That year, it was Disney’s Cinderella that enchanted audiences.

Glamour Rises From the Rubble

In the early years, Gary Cooper, Sophia Loren, Richard Widmark, Jean Gabin, Henry Fonda and Cary Grant would grace the Berlinale and trigger huge crowds of doting fans. Some things never change: Romy Schneider and Julia Roberts also had their moments of fame, and their moments of escape.

The Stars

In 1970, the festival was interrupted after the screening of the film by Michael Verhoeven, OK, a parable about the Vietnam War. 16 years later, controversy reignites over the film Stammheim. When the film received the Golden Bear, the president, Gina Lollobrigida, immediately declared: "I was against this film." In 1976, people got flustered over Realm of the Senses, by the great Japanese director Nagisa Oshima, over accusations that it was pornography.

Scandal!

Breathless by Jean-Luc Godard remains a must-see. A major work of the New Wave, it was awarded a Silver Bear. Another film that made an impression: Taxi. Iranian director Jafar Panahi, banned from practicing his profession, decides to film the clients in his taxi. A work which earned him the Golden Bear in absentia, because he was not allowed to leave his country.

Films aren't just works of art, they are also political, especially as the USSR and GDR were increasingly featured in the festival. In 1990 the first Berlinale was held in a reunified Berlin.

German photographer Daniel Josefsohn, who died in 2016 at the age of 54, made his mark in advertising with his irreverent aesthetic and punk sensibility. In June 2020 Montpellier Danse should have celebrated its 40th anniversary. Founded in 1981 by the city's mayor Georges Frêche, choreographer Dominique Bagouet and director since 1983, Jean-Paul Montanari, the festival has become in four decades a major event in the international dance calendar. But the coronavirus pandemic forced the festival to reschedule to a reduced festival in the autumn.
With rehearsal, interviews and archive footage this documentary places the present festival in dialogue with forty years of performance.
