In 1975, Hervé Poulain launched the BMW Art Car project. The objective: to have the bodywork of a racing car painted by one of the most prominent artists of the moment. Warhol, Stella, Lichtenstein, and Jeff Koons all used the car as a canvas, but the very first person to do it was Alexander Calder, an artist specialised in mobile sculptures.
