Viollet-le-Duc oversaw the renovation of Paris' Notre Dame cathedral in 1843. But that was barely scratching the surface of what he wanted to do: he was convinced he could restore Mont Blanc just as he would a building, and even published a book on his plans. Was he an ecologist ahead of his time or an artist detached from reality?
