With the Ukrainian city under attack, the Odessa Classics festival cannot be held there. As a sign of solidarity, Estonia has offered to welcome the festival with Tallinn hosting this year. The Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Olari Elts, will open this year’s edition with pianist and festival president Alexey Botvinov and violinist Daniel Hope in works by Pärt, Mozart, Britten and Silvestrov.

The concert was recorded without an audience at the Grand Théâtre de Provence in 2021 as part of the Aix-en-Provence Easter Festival.

Composed between 1909 and 1910 and premiered in Vienna in 1912, Symphony No. 9 in D major is an ode to orchestral music. Recorded without an audience in November 2020 at the Philharmonie de Paris, the concert is conducted by Klaus Mäkelä. A first for the young Finnish conductor, born in Helsinki in 1996, who will replace Daniel Harding as the head of the Orchestre de Paris in 2022.

An engineer as much as a composer Iannis Xenakis combines music, architecture and mathematics. Iannis Xenakis and the Percussions de Strasbourg collaborated on Persephassa, a work that places the audience at the centre of a circle formed by the musicians. There, the body of the listener becomes instrument, receptacle and relay of the music: a real sensory experience. Their second collaboration was Pleiades, one of Xenakis' masterpieces, for which an instrument, the sixxen, was created especially.
