Crime in the KremlinBoris Yeltsin's Re-election Campaign 1996
In early 1996 Russian president Boris Yeltsin looked washed up. With an upcoming election he was trailing the Communist party in the polls, was in severely ill health and was very unpopular amongst the Russian public. His liberal reforms had led to high unemployment and an almost total collapse of the government finances. Public sector salaries and pensions were not being paid.
This documentary tells the story of how the most ruthless election campaign in Russian history managed to get the deeply unpopular Boris Yeltsin elected for a second term.
