With George Benjamin as the composer and conductor of Martin Crimp’s libretto, staged by Katie Mitchell around Vicki Mortimer’s sets, Lessons in Love and Violence reproduces the subtle alchemy of Written on Skin and aims to achieve the same success.
To create this new opera, George Benjamin and Martin Crimp were inspired by the Elizabethan theatre, with its endless plotting, passion and violence. The plot of Lessons in Love and Violence sees a king opposing his wife and his son – a very Shakespearian universe that is expertly channelled by Katie Mitchell.
For this world premiere, the first-rate team behind the scenes is complemented by an outstanding cast on stage. The two main roles (played by Stéphane Degout and Barbara Hannigan) are accompanied by internationally renowned artists such as Gyula Orendt, Peter Hoare, Samuel Boden, Jennifer France, Krisztina Szabó and Andri Björn Róbertsson – all singing in perfect harmony with the Royal Opera House Orchestra.
Performance filmed on 26 May 2018 at the Royal Opera House, London.
