On August 14th 2018 the Morandi bridge, a major transport artery looming over the city of Genoa, suddenly collapsed killing 43 people. A large exclusion zone around the bridge area, which is now treated as a crime scene, means local residents cannot return to their homes and local businesses face bankruptcy.
