On April 12, 1961, in the midst of the Cold War, Yuri Gagarin became the first man to orbit the Earth, making him a household name overnight. But Houston decided to set its sights on an even greater feat: on September 12, 1962, the President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, announced the US would send the first man on the moon. A few years later, on July 21, 1969, the American astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the moon.
