On August 9, 378, at the Battle of Adrianople, the Roman army was destroyed by a coalition of Germanic tribes. In 390, Rome, which had remained untouched for eight centuries, was sacked. On September 4, 476, the last Western Roman Emperor was overthrown. Closely linked, these three milestones sealed the fall of the Roman Empire.
