Mapping the World: Kuril Islands

A volcanic archipelago in northern Japan, the Kuril Islands, have been administered by Russia since the end of the Second World War. In 2009, Japanese parliamentarians passed  a law reaffirming the sovereignty over the four islands close to Hokkaido, and demanding their restitution. A claim that the Russian government considers unacceptable.
