On 4 April 1949, the North Atlantic Treaty was signed, enshrining the creation of NATO just four years after the end of the Second World War. The primary objective of this military alliance of twelve European and North American countries was to prevent war in Europe and to counter the expansion of the Soviet bloc. Since its creation in the Cold War, the organisation has grown from 12 to 31 member states - including several former Eastern Bloc nations. Weakened by its turbulent history, NATO is facing a growing number of challenges: the difficulty of coordinating its members, the logistical obstacles in the event of an attack on European soil, and the threat, raised by Donald Trump, of an American withdrawal, at a time when European defence is almost entirely dependent on the United States.

Three years after Franklin D. Roosevelt's inauguration into the White House, in the midst of campaigning for a second term, America began to gradually recover from the effects of the 1929 Great Depression. He travelled by car and train for six months, visiting over 30 states and delivering speeches in over 100 cities. This was a significant challenge for Roosevelt, who had been largely reliant on a wheelchair due to a suspected case of polio. How did he manage to campaign despite this disability? Were reporters allowed to film and photograph him during his travels? And if re-elected, would he continue his policies to support society's disadvantaged and enact new economic measures to help rebuild the country?

The expedition was organised by Richard Byrd, a young explorer who had already gained great fame in the United States. The aircraft and radio equipment used in the mission were state-of-the-art technology. The cost of the mission was an incredible one million pounds, which is equivalent to 15 million pounds today.
A journalist from the New York Times and two cameramen from the film production company Paramount Pictures also took part in the adventure. They spent over a year in Antarctica, with an additional eight months spent at sea. What significance does the flight to the South Pole have for the history of aviation? On 1st October 1949, China commemorated the birth of the People's Republic of China, which was a momentous occasion in the history of Communist China. Thousands of people congregated at Tiananmen Square, holding up banners and red flags. Mao Zedong, the Communist Party Chairman, assumed the mantle of the new head of state at the age of 56.
Amidst the celebrations, the People's Liberation Army showcased a mammoth military parade in front of the Gate of Heavenly Peace. For 600 million Chinese, this day marked the end of a prolonged civil war between the Communists and Nationalists.

In 1959, over 900 Koreans left capitalist Japan to settle in North Korea, with the hope of a better life in the communist state. Japan had annexed the peninsula in 1910 and brought in around two million Koreans as cheap labour. However, they faced discrimination and restricted access to education and employment opportunities.
The Japanese and North Korean Red Cross organised the migration, encouraging more Koreans to leave Japan. Despite the lack of diplomatic relations between the two countries, they collaborated to facilitate the exodus.

During the First World War France was badly hit, with cities such as Arras and Reims reduced to rubble. In World War II, allied bombings destroyed Germany with cities like Berlin, Cologne and Dresden in ruins by 1945. Later it was the turn of Beirut and then the cities of Syria to be destroyed by war. With extensive archive footage, this documentary looks at the political, social and aesthetic issues of ruins, the very image of war.
